What does it take to be a freelancer?

To be successful as a freelancer, only one thing is absolutely necessary: determination. Every freelancer needs to know how to be a self-starter, work well on their own, keep their own schedule, and keep themselves accountable.

Of course, freelancers also need to have a skill to offer. However, there are so many different freelancer opportunities that there’s something for everyone — from skilled labor like carpentry or graphic design to the kind of work anyone can do like pet sitting, cleaning, or transporting food.

If you offer a common skill like delivering groceries or running errands, there will likely be a lot of competition. However, there will also be a lot of requests because these are services that many people need, and often. For those who offer skilled labor, there will be less competition and you have a better chance of winning over the clients who are looking for your service. However, there will likely be fewer requests.

So no matter what service you’re offering, it all balances out. You don’t need to have a highly-skilled service to offer. You just need to be determined. Clients want consistent work that they can rely on. And because there are so many freelancers to choose from, it’s easy to find a replacement if they aren’t happy with your work. That’s why you have to offer your best work every time. If you can do that, you can build a successful career.
